Uruguay is part of the main food exporting region of the world (along with Argentina, Brazil, and Paraguay).

The agribusiness sector accounts for around 80% of the total goods exported by Uruguay. In addition to its national exports, Uruguay plays a strategic role as a logistic HUB and largely acts as an exit gateway for Paraguayan and Bolivian agricultural products to the world.

Uruguay has two of the main ports on the Paraguay-Paraná waterway: Nueva Palmira and Montevideo.
